Why Live In A 55+ Active Living Community?
November 21, 2022
55+ communities aren’t a new concept, but they’re becoming a more popular choice as the Boomer generation looks to downsize. So today we’re tackling some points to consider when weighing a home purchase in a 55+ community.
What’s a 55+ community?
At it’s foundation, 55+ communities usually require that someone living in the household is 55 years of age or older. Sometimes there’s a minimum age requirement, too, but mainly these communities are created with the needs and desires of empty-nesters and retirees in mind.
Amenities that add value and ease to daily life
While most 55+ communities are run by HOAs (Home Owners Associations) and come with monthly HOA fees, most people find the value of the amenities and services to be well worth the cost. In fact, these services are one of the main benefits of living in a 55+ community.
Here are some examples of things a monthly HOA fee may cover:
· Snow and ice removal
· Landscaping, lawn and garden care
· Exterior maintenance (siding, windows and doors, driveways, sidewalks, porches, screens, exterior lighting…)
· Fitness center, pool, walking pathways, guest parking, monitored security
55+ Communities are designed for active, engaged adults who seek connection. Fully self-contained, the neighborhoods are structured to provide ample opportunity for socialization and involvement. The clubhouses are intended to be hubs of activity: with regular lectures, exercise classes and events. The beautifully landscaped outdoor spaces are created to foster congregation among residents.
Secure, safe and serene
Residents appreciate the intangible benefits afforded by 55+ communities, too. These communities are often gated or privately patrolled. Having neighbors in close proximity is also reassuring from a safety perspective. Finally, an active community of older adults offers a bit more peace than your average neighborhood.
Designed with you in mind
Quite literally, 55+ communities are designed for 55 or older adults. Homes are designed to be easily accessible. Typically an array of single-story floor plans are available for the choosing. Separate quarters for guests may be located upstairs or on the opposite side of the home from the primary bedroom. Want to spend time traveling? Go without worry – security and maintenance are covered.
